We look forward to hearing from Ellyn Lester, PhD, Assistant Dean of Construction and Architecture at Pennsylvania College of Technology on the topic of Mentoring During Tumultuous Times Using Systems Thinking to Truncate Mentoring Challenges during lunch on Wednesday, May 22nd.


If the recent pandemic showed us anything, it demonstrated that mentoring goes out the window during tumultuous times, especially in high stress, deadline-oriented "Essential Industries". Via an interactive discussion, we'll use the principles of Systems Thinking to identify several bigger picture issuesthat stop mentoring in its tracks. We will then find ways to alter the Causal Loop Diagram we developed so mentoring remains a priority. Throughout we will keep in mind that everyone involved in this system has their own agenda and that this type of Complex Adaptive System (CAS) is policy and intervention resistant by nature.

    Ellyn A. Lester, PhD, is the Assistant Dean of Construction and Architecture at Pennsylvania College of Technology. She was previously the Director of Built Environment Programs at Stevens Institute of Technology in Hoboken, New Jersey. Prior to Stevens, at New School of Architecture and Design in San Diego, and in positions such as Vice President of Membership at the Design-Build Institute of America, she advocated for excellence in the A/E/C Industry. She is also the recipient of the NAWIC Educational Foundation’s 2020 Carol A Kueker Construction Education Visionary Award, the 2012 AIA California Council Associate of the Year, DBIA Chapter of the Year in 2003, the SMPS Striving for Excellence Grand Prize in 2001, and was recently listed as one of Construction Dive’s Construction Champions of 2024.
