About the Book
The Last Man follows the lives of Lionel Verney and his circle as they confront personal turmoil and societal collapse. Beginning with Lionel's transformation from an uncivilized outcast to a close confidant of the noble Adrian, the novel explores themes of love, power, and ambition amidst the decline of civilization. As the story progresses, a devastating plague spreads across Europe, causing social chaos, natural disasters, and the downfall of governments. Through three generations, the novel delves into human resilience, the struggle for survival, and the consequences of ambition, love, and loss.
About the Author
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley (1797โ1851) was born in London, to her father the writer William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft. Mary's early life was unconventional and by the age of 16 she eloped with the then-married Percy Bysshe Shelley. Amongst their friends were Samuel Taylor Coleridge and Lord Byron, the latter of whom offered the challenge to Mary to write a ghost story which later became Frankenstein.
