Join us as we discuss "Embrace and Overcome Cultural & Linguistic Challenges at Work." We will have a special guest to speak at the beginning of the event, Emily Shearer. Ms. Shearer has been working with translation services and interpreting for over a decade. Pre-reads will be sent to registered attendees a week prior. Pre-reads will be centered on articles discussing how to navigate cultural and linguistic differences in the workplace. After lunch an open dialog will occur on how to support yourself through cultural and linguistic barriers at work.
Lunch will be provided (vegetarian options will be available).

Speaker Bio: Emily's principal role at Translate.One is managing foreign language interpreting services. She services a wide variety of clients from local governments & non-profit organizations to law firms and multi-national corporations. Promoting equality, inclusivity, and effective communication through language access – regardless of one's socio-economic background - motivates her on a daily basis.
Before joining Translate.One, Emily earned a B.A. in Comparative Cultures from Alfred University. She spent over six years in Europe working and studying in Germany, Austria, Slovakia, and Hungary. She became a certified ESL instructor, which led her years later to pursue and earn an MS. Ed. in ESL education from Duquesne University.
Outside of work, Emily is an avid supporter of Habitat for Humanity and advocate for affordable housing, specifically homeownership. She served on the Board of the Greater Pittsburgh Habitat affiliate for eight years, including three years as the first female Chair.
As a Family Mentor with the Jewish Family and Community Services refugee resettlement program, Emily deeply believes in upholding the dignity and rights of all individuals, no matter one's nationality or background.
