The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) North Texas Chapter presents a brief introduction to suicide prevention.
We will cover what we know about this leading cause of death, the most up-to-date research on prevention, and what we can all do to fight suicide. Participants will learn the common risk factors for suicide, how to spot the warning signs in others, and how to keep ourselves, our loved one, our professional networks, and those in our community safe.

- In Texas, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death with 4,193 deaths in 2021.
- In Texas, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-34 and the 4th leading cause of death for ages 35-44.
- In the US in 2021, the rate of suicide deaths was 14.1 for every 100,000 in population.
- In the US in 2021, the rates of suicide deaths for those in the Construction & Extraction (Mining, Oil & Gas) Industries were 49.4 per 100,000 men and 25.5 per 100,000 women – almost 2-3x the rate of the general population – making it the industry with the highest suicide rates.
